About This Project

One of the projects in Batu Erman’s lab (Sabancı University, Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Molecular Biology, Genetics and Bioengineering Program) focuses on mechanisms that control a tumor suppressor protein called p53. TUBITAK-funded (111T401) project which used biochemistry, bioinformatics and molecular biology techniques in the laboratory was published in the highly effective Molecular and Cellular Biology (Keskin, N., Deniz, E., Eryilmaz, J., Un, M., Ersahin, T., Cetin Atalay, R., Sakaguchi, S., Ellmeier, W. and Erman, B. PATZ1 is a DNA damage responsive alternatively spliced heterodimeric transcription factor that inhibits p53 function, Molecular and Cellular Biology 2015, 35(10):1741-1753. doi:10.1128/MCB.01475-14). An output of the research has been the discovery of new chemicals that activate the p53 protein and direct the cells to death. It is also aimed to carry out the development, patenting and preclinical researches of these new drugs with an interdisciplinary project.
